USA expresses commitment to develop South East, Nig.

The United States of America(USA) has expressed its commitment to the Political and economic development of Nigeria especially the South East Region.

The Political Officer in the US Consulate, Mr. Shashank Iyer who stated this during a courtesy visit to Abia State Governor,Okezie Ikpeazu at Government House Umuahia,said the US is committed to supporting issues concerning security,improved livelihood for rural dwellers as well as fostering harmonious relationship between the different ethnic groups in the country.
“Our commitment to the region in the South East and the state of Abia, the nation as well remains steadfast”,he said.
Iyer who noted that the USA has a wide range of programmes aimed at helping the poor and vulnerable members of the society said the International Visitor Leadership Programme(IVLP) of the US is aimed at sponsoring young leaders from the zone  to acquire leadership skills.
He said Abia state was selected for the programme based on the commitment and evidence of leaders such as Governor Okezie Ikpeazu who he said is dedicated to reformation and development of the state.
While pointing out that ethnic harmony is central to Nigeria’s development as a country,Iyer said harmonious relationship between the different ethnic groups in the country is key to the country’s economic  growth.
According to him, part of their visit to the South East region including Imo and Anambra would be to discuss key issues on how to support the economic development and Improved livelihood for rural dwellers and commended the governor on his “impressive re-election victory”.
In his response, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu who appreciated the United States of America for its concern to the South East region said the state government has continued to engage in collaborations with the US aimed at fostering the welfare of the people.
Ikpeazu while noting that the state has received tremendous support from the USA in terms of medical supplies and equipments disclosed that the state government has about three containers of medical equipments for distribution to primary healthcare centres across the state.
According to governor Ikpeazu, his administration as part of its intervention in the health care sector is building a world class mother and child hospital which will be named after Jackson Foundation in recognition of their contribution in the health care sector.
