African champions, Senegal lived up to their status as they became the first African side to win a match in this World Cup. They defied the intimidating home fans packed inside the Al Thumama Stadium to defeat Qatar 3-1.
Senegal scored the first goal with four minutes to the end of first half through Boulaye Dia, who capitalized on Boualem Khoukhi’s miscued clearance to rocket the ball into the net.
Three minutes after the break, former Bristol City striker, Famara Diedhiou headed in the second goal for Senegal.
Qatar fought back and rekindled their hopes of a possible come back when Muhammad Muntari pulled one back.
That flame of hope was completely extinguished when Bamba Dieng scored the third for Senegal.
Qatar will be eliminated later today if Ecuador fail to defeat the Netherlands later today while Senegal will qualify if they defeat Ecuador in their last group match.
