NIPR Seeks Partnership with Catholic Diocese on Ethical Communication, Peacebuilding

Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Abia State Chapter, has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting ethical communication, peacebuilding, and societal development through strategic collaboration with the Catholic Diocese of Umuahia.

This formed the focus of a courtesy visit by the leadership of the Institute to the Catholic Bishop of Umuahia, Most Rev. Michael Kalu Ukpong.

Speaking during the visit today, the Chairman of NIPR Abia State Chapter, Onyinye Ralph-Nwachukwu, described the engagement as more than a routine visit, noting that it was an opportunity to identify with a respected spiritual leader whose humility, leadership, and voice continue to inspire hope and positively shape society.

She commended the Church for its longstanding contributions to moral upbringing, peacebuilding, education, youth development, social advocacy, and community development, especially at a time when misinformation, hate speech, and harmful narratives spread rapidly across society.

According to her, the core values of Public Relations — building trust, strengthening relationships, fostering understanding, and advancing the common good — align naturally with the mission of the Church.

“We have come not only to pay our respects but also to seek your blessings and explore areas of collaboration towards promoting ethical values, responsible communication, social harmony, and human development in our state,” she said.

Responding, Bishop Ukpong appreciated the NIPR Abia State Chapter for championing ethical communication and assured the delegation of the Church’s support and partnership.

The cleric described Public Relations practice as vital in all spheres of human existence and urged practitioners to remain conscious of their responsibility in shaping a better society.

He cautioned against the spread of fake news and character assassination on social media in the guise of content creation, stressing that such negative values do not reflect Christian principles.

“As Christians, we must always seek and build peace because no meaningful progress or development can take place in any society without peace,” the Bishop stated.

He further encouraged Public Relations professionals to continue educating the public on responsible communication and avoid actions capable of undermining peace and unity in the country.

In a vote of thanks, the Ex-Officio III of the Chapter, O.J. Bob Amanze, appreciated the Bishop for the warm reception and wise counsel offered to the delegation, noting that the advice would continue to guide members in their professional responsibilities.
