Ironyi River Havoc: Abia D.Gov Visits Affected Communities, Disclose Govt Intentions

Abia State Deputy Governor, Sir Ude Oko Chukwu has disclosed the preparedness of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu led administration to reduce to its barest minimum situations that will negatively affect the lives of the citizens.

To this end, he said that Government will work out modalities to dredge the Ironyi river in Nkporo Land to forestall future occurrence of the havoc wrecked by flood in the three Communities of Ukwa, Okwoko and Agbaja Nkporo in Ohafia LGA.

Sir Oko Chukwu who announced this during an inspection visit to the three affected Communities to access the level of damage caused by the recent flood following an overflow of the Ironyi river that cuts across Nkporo Land pointed out that the only option available for Government is to dredge the river as a permanent solution.

The Deputy Governor while sympathizing with the Traditional Rulers and people of the affected Communities expressed deep pain over the unfortunate incident that destroyed properties, farmlands and rendered over one hundred families homeless, however thanked God that no life was lost and urged them to take heart as Government will do the needful to ameliorate their loses as well as ensure that such calamity does not reoccur.

In their remarks, the Traditional Rulers of Agboha autonomous Community, Okwoko Nkporo, Eze Ambassador Arunsi Nwankwo Uka, that of Achi Aliobi autonomous Community Agbaja Nkporo, Eze Ojukwu Imo Kalu and their Ukwa Nkporo counterpart, Ezeogo Mba Nkuma disclosed that despite several letters written to both SEMA, NEMA and other related Agencies on their predicament, nothing was done to the problem of flooding in their various Communities and expressed optimism that with the State Government’s timely visit, a lasting solution will be made.

137 houses from five compounds and shopping plaza were affected in Ukwa Nkporo with 61 houses from six Compounds of Okwoko Nkporo and 25 houses from six Compounds in Agbaja Nkporo as a result of the flood that ravaged the area recently
