IBIAKU COMMUNITY LEADERS LAUNCHES AWARENESS MATERIALS TO COMBAT ABORTION.

Leaders in Ibiaku Offot Community, Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, have launched a community-driven awareness campaign aimed at addressing abortion stigma and promoting access to accurate sexual and reproductive health information for women and girls.

The initiative, implemented in collaboration with the Greater Women Initiative for Health and Rights (GWIHR), held on 28th April 2026 saw the unveiling of Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials designed to challenge harmful myths and misconceptions surrounding abortion while encouraging informed reproductive health decision-making within the community.

Speaking during the event, the community leaders emphasised the need to confront stigma and misinformation, which often prevent women and girls from seeking timely health information and care.

They noted that silence, fear, and judgment remain significant barriers to reproductive health access, and that communities have a critical role to play in creating supportive environments for women and young people.

The awareness materials, which were printed and unveiled during the event, contain key messages on reproductive health, the dangers of unsafe abortion, and the importance of accessing accurate information and appropriate healthcare services.

The materials were meant to be displayed and shared across households, community gathering spaces, and other strategic locations within the community to ensure sustained public engagement.

A representative of (GWIHR )commended the leadership demonstrated by the community, describing the initiative as an important step towards promoting informed, dialogue and reducing stigma associated with reproductive health issues.
According to the representative, community-led approaches remain one of the most effective strategies for addressing deeply rooted social norms and misconceptions that negatively impact the health and well-being of women and girls.

The Community members who attended the launch welcomed the initiative and expressed optimism that the awareness materials would foster greater understanding of reproductive health issues, encourage positive community conversations, and support women and girls to seek information and services without fear of discrimination or judgment.

The Stakeholders noted that the campaign aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen sexual and reproductive health and rights awareness across Akwa Ibom State and underscores the important role of traditional and community leaders in advancing positive health outcomes at the grassroots level.

Continuing leaders of the Ibiaku Offot Community pledged to continue championing awareness efforts that promote dignity, informed choice, and improved health outcomes for women and girls.
