Greatness Grows from the Soil: Inspired to Excel – Discovering Soil Science, a book authored by Professor Mabel Ifeoma Onwuka, has been unveiled as an innovative educational resource aimed at simplifying soil science concepts for children and non-specialists.
Written in an engaging storytelling format, the book follows the experiences of three young characters whose curiosity and determination lead them on a journey of discovery in the world of soil science. Through their adventures, readers are introduced to key concepts such as soil structure, soil texture, major and micronutrients, biochar and compost production, climate change, environmental conservation, and sustainable agricultural practices.
Beyond its scientific content, the book is enriched with moral lessons and practical activities designed to help readers apply their knowledge in real-life situations. It also serves as a source of inspiration, demonstrating how the characters grow from school pupils into accomplished professionals, reinforcing the message that dedication, hard work, and perseverance can help young people achieve their dreams.
As part of efforts to promote science education and environmental awareness, Professor Onwuka and her team have embarked on a book outreach programme to schools. The initiative has reached institutions such as Amaowom Secondary School, Amaowom, and Evangel Secondary School, Old Umuahia. Copies of the book have also been donated to schools outside Abia State, including Highflyers Christian Academy, Onitsha, Anambra State.
The outreach programme is expected to stimulate greater interest in soil science among young learners while encouraging future careers in agriculture, environmental management, and related fields. It also underscores the importance of sustainable soil management in ensuring food security and protecting the environment for future generations.
