The Abia State Government has again promised to improve the public service and the welfare of civil servants. The aim is to build a more effective, professional, and people-focused public service.
The Head of Service, Benson Ojeikere, made this known during a Leadership Communications meeting with staff of the Office of the Head of Service. He spoke about the government’s plans to improve the way ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) work and deliver services to the people.
He said the Citizen-Centred Service Delivery Policy is helping public workers provide better services with greater responsibility and accountability. He also explained that the Weekly Work Plan, Staff Performance Assessment Management System, and Daily Work Reporting Policy are helping workers plan their duties better, improve performance, and remain accountable.
Speaking on workers’ welfare, Ojeikere said the government is providing modern office furniture and air conditioners to create a better working environment. He also said the Contributory Pension Scheme and the State Health Insurance Scheme are being fully implemented to improve the welfare and social security of civil servants.
He added that the Abia State Government is discussing with the Bank of Industry to create agribusiness opportunities for civil servants so they can improve their income.
The Head of Service also said the government is working with the Enugu State Government to settle the long-standing issue of unpaid retirement benefits owed to some Abia civil servants who left service several years ago.
Ojeikere said Governor Alex Otti’s administration remains committed to making the Abia State Civil Service one of the best and most improved in Nigeria through continuous reforms, better staff welfare, and quality service delivery.
Responding to questions from workers, he assured them that concerns about promotion arrears and other welfare issues had been noted and would be handled through the proper government process. He also said the government is committed to putting in place the legal support needed to ensure the Contributory Pension Scheme continues successfully.
He encouraged civil servants to support the ongoing reforms by remaining professional, disciplined, and dedicated to their duties. He added that the Leadership Communications programme will continue to strengthen communication between the government and workers and help improve the Abia State Public Service.
