Abia State has been selected as one of the six states in the federation to represent Nigeria at an international Medical symposium set to take place in Ghana towards the end of this month.
The symposium, titled; Human Capital Opportunity for Prosperity and Equity, (HOPE), is a collaborative initiative between the World Bank and the Federal Government of Nigeria.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s Executive Council meeting, presided over by the Governor, Dr Alex Otti.
Prince Kanu emphasized that the selection of Abia is in recognition of the ongoing reforms by the present administration in the states health care sector which has drawn national attention.
“The reason for choosing Abia State as one of the states among the 36 state of the federation is as a result of the focus on the state due to the ongoing reforms in the states health sector”, Prince Kanu stated.
He disclosed that the Abia Electricity Bill has scaled it’s second reading at the State House of Assembly and pointed out that the passage of the bill will give further impetus to the ongoing reforms in the State’s Power sector.
Prince Kanu expressed optimism is that members of the State Assembly will fast track the passage of the bill upon resumption from their recent recess.
The Commissioner said that “The Light Up Abia Initiative”, originally implemented in Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia, has expanded to other parts of the state with 4,345 solar lights installed in 86 locations across the state.
“This is in fulfillment of the need to make our towns and cities more comfortable for Abians and residents while also improving the security situation across the state.
“The program will continue to spread through all nooks and crannies of the state untill every community in Abia State is lit up”, Prince Kanu said.
He revealed that the Governor has directed Landlords in Aba whose buildings lack approved plans to obtain building certificates within a 90-day grace period and l added that andlords would be allowed to pay the old rate for approvals during this window.
“The Governor through the Greater Aba Development Authority, (GADA), is granting landlords so affected a 90 day Moratorium within which to obtain the building certificate approval through the payment of the old rate for such approvals.
He emphasized that the government’s decision is aimed at encouraging compliance without overburdening property owners.
“This ofcourse is another instance of the Governor’s compassionate disposition towards implementation of government’s policies and programmes”, Prince Kanu remarked.
Contributing, the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Engr. Ikechukwu Monday, stated that the Electricity bill was a direct response to the Electricity Act of 2023, which moved power from the Exclusive to the Concurrent List and highlighted that the change grants states the authority to generate and distribute electricity to consumers.
Mr. Monday emphasized that once the bill is enacted, it will also pave the way for the creation of the Abia State Rural Electrification Agency adding that with other proactive measures being implemented by the present administration, “Abia is poised to become a power generation hub for the entire South East region”.
