Spain reached their first-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup quarter-finals with an emphatic 5-1 victory over Switzerland in Auckland.
Barcelona’s Aitana Bonmati put Spain ahead before Switzerland equalised when Laia Codina, put the ball in her net. Before long, Spain restored their lead through Alba Redondo’s header. Bonmati scored her second goal in the 36th minute to make it 3-1.
Just before halftime, Codina redeemed herself for her own goal by adding Spain’s fourth.
Jennifer Hermoso completed the routing in the second half.
Spain will play the winners of Sunday’s match between the Netherlands and South Africa in the quarter-finals in Wellington next Friday.
