Lisandro Martinez scored the only goal of the encounter in the 78th minute as his shot from the edge of the box took a deflection off Sasa Lukic and looped over Bernd Leno in goal for the home side.
It was a lackluster performance and it seemed the match will end in a stalemate before the Argentine scored with United’s first shot on target.
After defeating Rangers on Thursday, United have now won two matches in a row.
United’s next league match will be against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford while 10th placed Fulham will battle Newcastle United.
In other matches played today, Brentford defeated Crystal Palace 2-1 as Leicester City came from behind to defeat Tottenham Hotspur by the same score line.
West Ham United came from behind to hold Aston Villa 1-1.
