Cross-River NLC Urges Govt to Address Unresolved Worker Welfare Issues

As workers across the nation celebrated Labour Day, the Cross River State chapter of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) took the opportunity to remind the state government of several pressing issues that remain unresolved regarding the welfare of state employees.

Comrade Gregory Olayi, Chairman of the NLC in Cross River, highlighted several concerns, including the delayed promotions of workers, irregular gratuity payments, inconsistencies in the implementation of the minimum wage, and the need for pension harmonization. He also called for the restoration of union activities in public transport hubs and better recognition for qualified personnel in the civil service.

Despite these concerns, Comrade Olayi acknowledged the state government’s efforts in infrastructure development, the revival of state-owned assets, and the restoration of security through Operation OKWOK, which he believes justify the Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, being named the “Most Labour Friendly Governor.”

Similarly, Comrade Monday Ogbodum, Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), praised Governor Otu for his “people-first” policies, including the REDI program for retirees and efforts to reclaim Cross River’s 76 oil wells. However, he too raised concerns about outstanding promotion arrears, the need for official vehicles for workers, and unfulfilled employment promises.
