Women Urged to Break Barriers, Embrace Leadership Roles

Women in Rivers State have been urged to overcome societal limitations, discover their potentials, and take up leadership roles in politics and organisations rather than confining themselves to traditional positions.

The Chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Rivers State branch, Tamunoibuemi Life-George, made the call during a sensitisation programme held for women in Aluu community, Ikwerre Local Government Area, on March 13, 2026.

The programme, organised as part of activities marking International Women’s Day, featured the screening of documentary films showcasing women supporting one another and excelling in leadership positions.

Life-George said the initiative was designed to inspire women to move beyond being followers and actively participate in leadership and decision-making processes.

“We came to encourage them not just to follow, but to lead. Life does not begin and end because one is a woman. Women must recognise their abilities and take up positions such as chairmanship and other leadership roles in organisations and political parties,” she said.

She noted that women are often underrepresented in key decision-making positions within political parties, stressing the need for increased participation to ensure their voices influence policies and governance.

According to her, support among women should go beyond mere slogans and translate into practical actions that promote good governance and improved living standards in Rivers State.

Speaking on behalf of the participants, Dr. Darlington Confidence said the orientation of many women towards marriage is evolving, with more women now pursuing personal development and opportunities beyond domestic responsibilities.

She explained that while marriage was previously viewed mainly as a platform for childbearing and home management, women are increasingly striving for economic independence and self-fulfilment.

Dr. Confidence urged women to be industrious and avoid overdependence on their spouses, noting that financial independence enhances their influence both at home and in society.

She also commended FIDA for enlightening women on their rights and responsibilities, expressing optimism that the awareness would empower more women to take active roles in community development and leadership.
