The Unity Cup football tournament and the commissioning of newly renovated classroom blocks at Umuagu Central School were concluded in grand style in Umuagu community, Ohuhu, Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State, amid commendations for the Emelandu family’s commitment to education, youth development and community unity.
Leading the encomiums, the Royal Father of Umuagu, His Royal Highness Eze Engr. John Amaghereonu Ekeoma, expressed deep gratitude to High Chief Dr. Ikechukwu Samuel Emelandu (Akurụo Uno I of Umuagu) for renovating two classroom blocks that were previously in a deplorable condition. The monarch described Umuagu as a pro-education community and noted that the intervention would significantly improve teaching and learning.

He invoked ancestral and divine blessings upon Dr. Emelandu and his family; praying God to bless the works of his hands and reward his philanthropic efforts.
Also speaking, the President-General of Umuagu Community, Mr. Ahukanna Ndubuisi Chizaram, thanked Dr. Emelandu for donating fully renovated and well-equipped classroom blocks as a way of giving back to society. He lamented that the former dilapidated state of the classrooms had negatively affected students’ psychology and hindered effective teaching and learning.

He described the projects as timely and transformative, and called on other well-meaning individuals, philanthropists and corporate organisations to emulate Dr. Emelandu’s gesture, stressing that government alone cannot meet all infrastructural and development needs of communities.
Commissioning the renovated classrooms, the Chairman, Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), represented by Mr. Chigozie Ogbonna, lauded the Emelandu family for their sustained commitment to educational development. He disclosed that this was the second major renovation and retrofitting project Dr. Emelandu had executed for the benefit of his community.

Mr. Ogbonna also commended the family for instituting scholarships for indigent students and assured the community that ASUBEB would deploy more teachers to the school upon request.
In his speech, High Chief Dr. Ikechukwu Samuel Emelandu said the Unity Cup, instituted in honour of his late father, Chief Godwin N. Emelandu, was conceived as more than a football competition. He explained that the tournament was designed to promote unity, discipline, sportsmanship and character formation among young people, values his late father strongly upheld.

He noted that the successful completion of the Unity Cup and the commissioning of the classroom blocks represented a powerful intersection of sports, education and community values, adding that the Emelandu family remains committed to supporting both youth development and education.
Dr. Emelandu also paid glowing tribute to his grandmother, Daa Agnes Emelandu, describing her as a woman of compassion and quiet strength whose belief in education laid the foundation for the family’s legacy. Inspired by these legacies, he undertook the renovation of two separate four-classroom blocks: one in loving memory of his late father, Chief Godwin Nlewedim Emelandu, commissioned on October 4, 2025, and another in honour of his late grandmother, Daa Agnes Emelandu, commissioned on December 31, 2025.

He announced the establishment of the Chief Emelandu Educational Fund and Scholarship, aimed at supporting students from primary to tertiary levels and ensuring sustainable community development.
The event also featured the final match of the Unity Cup, which saw Aguebi Village defeat Umukonu Village by a lone goal, scored by Tobechukwu Ndubuisi in the second half.

Dr. Emelandu also thanked players, coaches, officials, teachers, parents and students who participated, with a renewed call for collaboration among government, private individuals and organisations to advance education, sports and youth empowerment in Umuagu.
