August Conference: Bende women commended for their role in agriculture

The Wife of Abia State Governor, Mrs. Priscilla Otti

The wife of the Governor of Abia State, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, has commended the Mayor of Bende Local Government Area, Deacon Uwabunkeonye Bassey, for supporting women in Bende through agriculture and trading.

The Governor’s wife made the statement at Bende women August conference held at the Council Headquarters recently.

Mrs. Otti represented by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Prof. Ijeoma Iheukwumere, said that Bende women has shown resilience through agriculture, trading and corporate engagement to the development of the state.

The Governor’s wife also expressed that Bende Local Government Area plays a significant role in Abia state, especially as a major rice-producing region.

“Your ongoing contributions to the agricultural sector are not only vital to our economy but also a source of pride. I encourage you to continue your efforts, knowing that you are actively building a better future for our state and its people”.

Again, this year 2025, theme, Abia Women: United in Strength, Empowered for Purpose is timely and profound, our women has demonstrated that this meeting is not just a gathering but has contributed immensely to the unity and development of our communities.

Earlier, the Chairman on the occasion, Hon. Iheanyi Frank Chinasa, extolled the women for their contributions to Abia development.

He assert that the stability women brings to the home and in corporate governance accelerates development in nation building and encouraged them to remain steadfast in supporting the performing administration of Governor Otti.

Chinasa said that he joined politics to change the narrative adding that Abia is in a better hand with Governor Otti leading us to progress.

In her address, the wife of the Mayor, Mrs. Kelechi Uwabunkeonye, said that the conference marks a special moment for women.

The conference stand as a testament to our resolve that no challenge is too great when we stand together as women.

“We are not merely here to discuss issues, we are here to chart pathways, inspire action, and strengthen the bonds that unite us as sisters, mothers, leaders and nation builders” Mrs. Bassey further stated.

The Deputy Mayor of Bende LGA. Hon. Ngozi Anya

Hon. Ngozi Anya, the Deputy Mayor of the council, expressed gratitude to the wife of Abia Governor for all her support and empowerment towards Bende women.

She said that Governor Otti’s inclusivity of women in his administration has shown that while women play a greater role in the home front, they are not to be relegated to the kitchen.

Meanwhile, the Council representing Bende ward, Hon. Emmanuel Nwankwo said that Abia women has shown capacity in various field of endeavor because Governor Otti sees them as co-pilot in the development of the State.

He advised women who still sees politics as only men affair to drop the idea and become part of the movement to change the narrative in Abia and Nigeria at large.
