The National Emergency Management Agency NEMA said it has so far relocated about 1000 flood victims in 3 communities within Ahuda East Local Government Area of Rivers State, to a temporary Internally Displaced Persons camp.
The South – South zone coordinator of NEMA Ibarakumo Walson listed the 3 communities as Ochigba, Ikata, and Ojosu.
He told our reporter that the temporary Internally Displaced persons camp is at Ikata Community Primary School. A school still in section.
He however said NEMA is still accessing the extent of the flood in affected communities and will continue to provide relief materials to flood victims.
Meanwhile, the chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area Solomon Abel Eke says the council sets aside money to tackle emergency cases including flood, every month.
Mr Abel Eke made this known while speaking on the several measures the council is taking to tackle flooding in some parts of the area.
The Obio/ Akpor council chairman who declined to state the exact amount , told our reporter that camps have been set up, including relief materials in case the flood situation worsen in the area. He also said the council have began its health insurance scheme that would tackle the health challenges of flood victims in the area.
” the only emergency we have seen now is this flood thing because of the forecast. On monthly basis we set money for emergency. We have arrangement with those who are selling the relief materials. So that once there is anything on ground, we just activate it and then we go and take care. We are also running a health insurance scheme program. So for health, we are hundred percent assured that for any reason, the health care providers will go and attend to our people. But you must register.” He stated.
He, further ,warned against building on waterways and canals to cub flooding.
