Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, has explained why his administration organised a special celebration for the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, saying the event was aimed at recognising a lifetime of selfless service, integrity and exemplary leadership.
Governor Otti stated this on Friday at the Michael Okpara Auditorium Umuahia, during the 85th birthday celebration organised by the Abia State Government in honour of the revered monarch.

The Governor described the Obi of Onitsha as a distinguished statesman, a mentor and a leader whose contributions have transcended traditional leadership and impacted society at national and international levels.
He said the celebration was designed not only to honour the monarch but also to send a strong message to younger generations that diligence, honour and hard work remain enduring values.

“We want our young people to know that it pays to be diligent. Honour pays”, Governor Otti said.
The Governor stressed the importance of unity among Nigerians and cautioned against divisive politics driven by ethnic and religious sentiments.

“We are all one and the same. You know, when misguided politicians want to divide us, they begin to remind us that, you are from here, the other person is from there”, he stated.
Governor Otti praised the monarch’s contributions to Igboland, Nigeria, Africa and the wider global community, noting that his wisdom and leadership have continued to inspire many across generations.

He further described the traditional ruler as a trusted adviser and father figure, revealing that he (Gov Otti) regularly seeks his counsel on important matters.
Governor Otti also disclosed that his administration was rebuilding the Ojukwu Bunker as part of efforts to preserve the state’s historical heritage and reaffirmed his government’s commitment to people-centred governance and economic transformation.

According to the Governor, Abia had in previous years suffered reputational challenges outside the state, adding his administration had begun reversing the trend through infrastructure renewal and inclusive governance.
In their separate remarks, the Senator representing Abia South Senatorial District, Enyinnaya Abaribe, and the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Caleb Ajagba, described the occasion as a celebration of excellence and exceptional leadership.

They commended Governor Otti for recognising individuals who have made significant contributions to society, snd described the Obi of Onitsha as a monarch who had brought dignity and prestige to the traditional institution.
Also, the Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, paid tribute to the monarch, describing him as a personality who has evolved into an institution in his own right.

She urged Abians to continue supporting Governor Otti’s administration to sustain the state’s development agenda.
Responding, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe recalled his long-standing relationship with Governor Otti dating back to their time at Diamond Bank, where he served as Chairman and Otti as Chief Executive Officer.

Igwe Achebe described the Governor as “an intelligent and very hardworking individual” and urged residents to continue supporting his administration.
He expressed confidence in the Governor’s ability to advance the state’s development agenda, saying that the achievements recorded so far represented only the beginning of greater accomplishments.

The event which featured cutting of the birthday cake and goodwill messages, attracted traditional rulers, political leaders, clergy and other dignitaries from across Igboland and beyond.
