A prominent industrialist and politician, Chief Nnamdi Iro Orji, popularly known as Opotoyom, has emerged winner of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) primary election for the Abia North Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The primary election, held on May 29, 2026, witnessed a large turnout of party delegates and members from the five local government areas within the senatorial district.
Chief Orji reportedly defeated three other aspirants, including former member of the House of Representatives, Uko Nkole, to secure the party’s senatorial ticket.
In a related development, Ugoeze Elizabeth Ndidiamaka Obioma has also emerged winner of the NDC primary election for the Bende Federal Constituency House of Representatives seat.
The exercise, which took place at the Uzuakoli Town Hall in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State, was keenly contested despite delays in commencement.
At the end of the exercise, the professional nurse reportedly outperformed other contestants to clinch the party’s nomination for the constituency.
As of the time of filing this report, the national leadership of the Nigerian Democratic Congress had yet to officially release the results of the May 29 primaries conducted across the country.
The delay in the official announcement has generated anxiety among party members and observers awaiting formal confirmation of the outcomes.
