The Labour Party has congratulated Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his re-election for a fourth presidential term, describing his victory as a demonstration of the confidence of the Brazilian electorate in his leadership and the ideals of social democracy.
In a press statement issued on Friday, October 30, 2026, and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, the party said Lula’s victory further reinforces the ideological similarities between Brazil’s Workers’ Party (PT) and Nigeria’s Labour Party.
The party noted that both political organisations share a commitment to social democracy, social justice, economic inclusion and policies that prioritise the welfare and aspirations of ordinary citizens.
Lula secured re-election in Brazil’s October 25 presidential run-off, winning 51.79 per cent of valid votes to defeat his opponent, Flávio Bolsonaro, who polled 48.21 per cent, according to Brazil’s electoral authorities.
Drawing lessons from the Brazilian election, the Nigerian Labour Party urged citizens to support its candidates across all elective positions in the forthcoming general elections.
The party pointed to the administration of Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, as evidence of its capacity to deliver people-oriented governance, insisting that the governor’s performance demonstrates the party’s commitment to its social democratic principles.
According to the statement, the Labour Party believes that extending its leadership across the various tiers of government, including the presidency, would provide Nigeria with an opportunity to pursue inclusive development and improve citizens’ welfare.
It further called on Nigerians to remain confident in the party’s vision, stressing that the Brazilian electoral experience demonstrates the power of citizens to determine their political future through the ballot.
The party concluded its message with a call for greater political participation, declaring that “People Power is greater than political power.”
The statement was signed by Ken Eluma Asogwa, National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, on October 30, 2026.
