The Abia State chapter of the Labour Party has conducted the screening exercise for aspirants seeking to contest for seats in the Abia State House of Assembly ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The exercise, organized by the State Working Committee (SWC) of the party, was held in line with the official timetable of the Labour Party, which fixed May 20, 2026, for the screening of House of Assembly aspirants across the state.
According to a statement signed by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Iroegbu Emenike, the screening was conducted in strict compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act, the constitution of the Labour Party, and the approved guidelines governing the party’s pre-election activities.
The party disclosed that a total of 24 aspirants participated in the exercise, presenting their credentials and other required documents before the screening committee as part of efforts to ensure transparency, credibility, and fairness in the selection process.
The screening exercise was attended by key stakeholders and elected officials of the party, including the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, and the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Austin Okezie Ugolee, alongside other members and leaders of the House.
Labour Party described the exercise as peaceful, orderly, and thorough, noting that the process reflects the party’s commitment to internal democracy, due process, and the emergence of credible candidates capable of representing the interests of the people.
The party further reaffirmed its commitment to strictly adhering to the approved timetable and guidelines throughout all stages of the electoral process.
It assured members and supporters that every activity leading to the primaries and the 2027 general elections would be conducted transparently and in accordance with the law.
The party leadership emphasized that adherence to the timetable remains essential in sustaining orderliness, discipline, and confidence among party members and aspirants across the state.
Labour Party also stated that the official outcome of the screening exercise would be released after the completion of all internal processes and necessary reviews.
