Akwa Ibom House to convoke security Summit

Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly is to organize a security summit that will bring together sakeholders and the Heads of Security agencies in the state to brainstorm on how to bring a lasting solution to the insecurity ravaging EtimEkpo/Ukanafun areas of the state. 

This was part of their resolution after a motion brought before the House by the maker representing Etim-Ekpo/Ika State constituency, Gabriel Toby on the persistent criminal activities by some undesirable elements in the area who he said have made his constituents to live in agony and perpetual fear. 

According to him, the perpetrators are allegedly involved and connected with series of crimes such as armed robbery, rape, cultism, kidnapping, unlawful possession of firearms in the area.

However, lawmakers took turn to expressed dissatisfaction over the security challenges bedeviling Etim Ekpo and its environs and enjoined the police and other security agencies in the state to step up actions to ensure that criminal activities are nipped on the bud.

On his part, the Speaker, Barr. Onofiok Luke mandated the committee on Security, Youths and Sports to convene the proposed security summit and re-stated the commitment of the state legislature in partnering with governor Udom Emmanuel to ensure the security of lives and property in the state.

“I appreciate the member representing Ika/Etim-Ekpo for rising to the occasion, and this goes to show the disposition of the sixth assembly which is pro people and to always bring to the fore the issues and challenges that affect both indigenes and non-indigenes who are residing here or doing business in our state.’ He said.

Meanwhile, gory tale has continued to trail the situation in the area despite the efforts of the police command to deploy special squad in the volatile areas of EtimEkpo/Ukanafun and the killing of the kingpins, IsoAkpafid and Stainless respectively.

 Recently, two students of a private University in the area were kidnapped but later released while an INEC staff kidnapped in the area was yet to be released.
