Akwa Ibom Council Establishes Education Trust Fund

Nsit Ubium Local Government Council of Akwa Ibom State through its legislature has enacted a bylaw establishing an Education Trust Fund.

The Chairman of the Council, Alfred Charles who disclosed this during the ongoing local government tour of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, on Wednesday said political office holders in the area contribute one per cent of their earnings to the fund, while the council had contributed N100 million.

The Chairman stated that the essence of the enactment was for the initiative to survive beyond the tenure of the present administration.

While calling on indigent students from Nsit Ubium to take advantage of the opportunity, the council boss said the five-member board overseeing the fund had so far facilitated scholarships for 53 indigenes of the council studying various courses in tertiary institutions across the country.

He added that 105 beneficiaries were targeted before the end of the administration.

The chairman highlighted education as a major area of intervention, noting that the council had equipped the Patience Umo Eno ICT Centre with solar power and increased the number of computers to 250.

He also hinted that most of the projects done within two years in office followed the needs assessment carried out immediately after assumption of office even as he explained that his administration was intentional in domesticating the vision of governor Umo Eno’s ARISE agenda.

“Our projects were guided by needs assessment conducted at the beginning of the administration in 2024, aimed at identifying and progressively addressing the pressing needs of the people

According to him, the council has constructed two major modern markets, including the Urua Ntakrok Model Market, comprising three blocks of lock-up stores housing 36 shops, 27 open-partitioned stalls accommodating 378 traders, six blocks of open shades, toilets, a generator house, potable water facilities, solar-powered lights and market offices.

He said the investments were designed to create a more conducive environment for traders while strengthening economic activities and improving internally generated revenue for the council.
