Akwa Ibom Anniversary: Obasanjo Visits Akwa Ibom Monday

As the activities marking the 35th anniversary of Akwa Ibom State creation continues, the former president of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo is billed to visit the State on Monday for the commissioning of the dualized 29km Etinan-Ndon Eyo road.

The special Assistant to Governor Udom Emmanuel on Research and Documentation, Mr Ndueso Essien disclosed this to journalists on Sunday during inspection of the road project which has two cable bridges.

The Etinan-Ndon-Eyo road handled by a Chinese construction firm, Wizchino Engineering, connects several communities in Etinan and Onna, governor Udom Emmanuel’s hometown, with the East-West road and grants access to the industrial belt of the State.

Describing the nature of the road before, the governor’s aide said, “Ekpene Ukpa bridge was a nightmare, giving road users a horendous experience. Several lives were lost before Governor Emmanuel came to the rescue.

“The old Mkpok bridge was also at the verge of collapse before the intervention of the government officials who drove away illegal sand dredgers before the construction of the lastest cable bridge.”

Also, residents and motorists interviewed recalled the many challenges they faced on the road before it’s construction describing the project as viable economic roads from the hinterland to the urban centers.
