Abia State is set to host the 2026 edition of World Igbo Day on September 29, with South-East governors and other prominent Igbo leaders expected to converge on the state for the celebration.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this in Monday while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
Prince Kanu said this years edition with the theme; “Njiko Aka“, would provide an opportunity for Ndigbo across the world to reflect on the unity, identity and collective accomplishments of the Igbo people.
According to the commissioner; “The World Igbo Day provides a platform for Igbos to come together to reflect on the unity of the people.
“That underscores uniqueness, indivisibility, and unparalleled accomplishments of Ndi Igbo as a people”.
He said the programme would feature a keynote lecture titled “The Igbo Charter and the Development of Ala Igbo”, alongside other activities designed to commemorate the contributions and sacrifices of the Igbo people.
Prince Kanu disclosed that the event would also include the laying of wreaths in honour of fallen Igbo heroes and heroines, as well as an interdenominational church service.
Other activities lined up for the celebration, according to Prince Kanu, include a march-past by participating state delegations, traditional dances and speeches by the South-East governors and notable Igbo leaders expected to attend the event.
