The Abia Governor, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, has commissioned three major projects recently at the headquarters of Ukwa West Local Government Area, describing them as strategic investments to strengthen grassroots governance.
The projects a new Works and Lands Building, a remodeled Legislative Complex, and the Asa Multipurpose Hall were commissioned amid assurances of the administration’s sustained commitment to rebuilding public institutions and delivering people-oriented development.
Represented by his deputy, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, the governor said the projects transcend physical infrastructure, noting that they are deliberate efforts to deepen democracy, promote accountability, and bring government closer to the people.
He explained that the Works and Lands Building would enhance planning, supervision, and maintenance of infrastructure within the council, ensuring more coordinated and sustainable development initiatives..
The upgraded Legislative Complex, he added, would provide a conducive environment for effective lawmaking, improve transparency, and strengthen representation at the local level.
In his speech, the governor stated that the Asa Multipurpose Hall is designed to serve as a hub for community engagement, youth empowerment programmes, cultural activities, and policy dialogues, thereby fostering unity and civic participation among residents.
The governor commended the Executive Mayor of Ukwa West, Pst. Dike Nwankwo, for what he described as purposeful and people-focused leadership, emphasizing that meaningful and lasting transformation must begin at the grassroots.
He assured residents that his administration remains committed to prudent resource management, institutional reforms, and infrastructure projects that directly impact citizens’ lives. Otti urged the community to safeguard and responsibly utilize the facilities, stressing that public cooperation is vital for sustainable development, before formally declaring the projects open.
In his remarks, the Mayor of Ukwa West LGA, Pst. Dike Nwankwo, said his administration had completed nearly 20 projects within 15 months in office, with several others ongoing. He attributed the achievements to the support and enabling environment provided by the state government.
The mayor noted that the newly commissioned facilities would provide office accommodation for more than 25 Works Department staff, strengthen legislative functions, and offer a befitting venue for meetings and community programmes. He described the projects as practical steps toward enhancing service delivery and restoring confidence in local governance.
In their separate remarks, the member representing Ukwa West State Constituency, Hon. Godwin Adiele; the Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Philemon Ogbonna; and the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Hon. Ikechukwu Uwanna, praised the council leadership for delivering visible development.
They observed that Ukwa West is among the local government areas benefiting from the current administration’s policies and reaffirmed the state government’s resolve to extend further dividends of democracy across Abia. The officials also urged eligible residents to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), underscoring the importance of active participation in the electoral process.
