Uwem Ekanem has been appointed as Special Adviser to the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, on Aviation and Airport Development.
He will also oversee the activities of the newly created State Ministry of Aviation and Airport Development pending the appointment of a substantive commissioner.
The Secretary to the Akwa Ibom State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah, disclosed this in a statement issued in Uyo on Tuesday, noting that the appointment takes effect from Monday, May 4, 2026.
Uwah explained that the appointment is aimed at strengthening the state’s aviation sector and expanding airport infrastructure.
Highlighting Ekanem’s professional background, Uwah stated:
“Before his elevation to Chief Executive Officer, he served as Head of Airport Operations from 2015 to 2019, where he oversaw safety, security, and service delivery at Victor Attah International Airport.
“Earlier, he was Principal Commercial Officer from 2009 to 2015, driving revenue growth, managing concessions, and coordinating commercial development for the airport.
“He also worked with Virgin Nigeria Airways Ltd as Airport Manager in Calabar between 2006 and 2009, and began his aviation career with Aviation Development Company Plc, where he rose from Traffic and Ticketing Officer to Station Manager between 2003 and 2006.
“He holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration and a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Uyo, alongside professional certifications in aviation management and airport operations.”
The creation of the new ministry is part of broader efforts to improve efficiency, attract investment, and enhance the state’s capacity to manage growing air traffic and related economic opportunities.
