The killing of Alafuro Peterside by a police officer in the Elekiah axis in Port Harcourt is still a hot topic in the mouth of some individuals. Alafuro Peterside was killed at a bar in what the police said was an accident occasioned by a stray bullet. That position however has been rejected by Ibitari Peterside the wife of the late Alafuro Peterside.
Speaking on the issue, the Civil Society Organization said only a thorough unbiased probe will unravel the truth. Chairman of the CSO in Rivers State Enefa Georgewill told our reporters that the Commissioner of Police must act quickly in order not to rubbish his good works and reputation. He said the CP should immediately arrest, dismiss and prosecute the police officer that killed Alaforo Peterside in front of his wife and children. He urges the CP to the do right thing so that he doesn’t give them room to doubt him, as they are watching.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State has promised to ensure that justice is served over the killing of Alafuro Peterside by police. CP Emeka Abonyi said this when the members of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) proved themselves to the command headquarters to demand justice for the late Peterside who they said was their member. CP Emeka said the police will carry out total interrogation to unravel the circumstances behind his death.
Earlier, the president of the Ijaw Youth Council Jonathan Lokpobiri appealed to the police to ensure that the erring officer is prosecuted. He said when a similar incident happened in the time past; the erring officer was dismissed, stating that they don’t want dismissal. Mr. Lokpobiri further explained that there is a prescribed discipline for such offense, and the procedures are meant to be made open so that it will serve as a deterrent to other erring police officer.
However, the police commissioner in Rivers State has urged hospitals to always attend to victims of gunshots wound who are brought to their facility with or without a police report. He stressed that when there is a gunshot injury for whatever reason, whether a suspect or no suspect is being brought to the hospital, the hospital should admit and give them treatment. Stating that it is the internationally acceptable best practice.
