Nigerians have commended the lawmaker representing Obingwa-West State constituency, in Abia state House of Assembly (ABHA ) for his motion that led to a resolution which kept electricity tariff increment suspended for 10 months.
Speaking with a business man, Mr. Chime Onyema, in Aba, Abia state, recently, he applauded the Abia lawmaker for his timely motion, which withheld President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s assent on electricity tariff hike, proposed to have started on July 1, 2023.

Mr. Onyema said: “Nigerians would have suffered more economic hardship if the increase had taken place at the initial proposed date when the middle and lower class citizens were still struggling to cope with the negative effects of fuel subsidy removal on their households”.
In a related development, artisans, based in Umuahia, Abia state; Mr. Ikechukwu Mark and Mrs. Chibuzor Daniel have also hailed the former chairman, Obingwa Local Government Area (LGA) for moving the first motion of the 8th Abia Assembly, describing it as people’s oriented motion.
The Chairman, House Committee on Public Service, Abia State House of Assembly (ABHA), Erondu Uchenna Erondu Jnr had moved the first motion of the 8th Abia Assembly on matter of urgent public importance at the plenary on June 29, 2023, urging FG and her electricity bodies to suspend the increment until the hardship on Nigerians ocassioned by the removal of fuel subsidy is absorbed.
The motion had gained the support of Federal House of Representatives, National Assembly Abuja, with a resolution that kept the electricity tariff increment suspended for 10 months.
They artisans described founder, Igodo Igwe Foundation as a people’s-centred lawmaker, adding that he initiated a resolution that kept electricity tariff hike suspended for 10 months from the initial proposed date of July 1, 2023.
They described the resolution as a huge financial relief for Nigerians within the 10 months it lasted.
Meanwhile, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has frowned at the over 300 per cent increase in electricity tariff for customers, disclosing that it will have a negative impact on the prices of goods produced by these industries, suffocate some local industries and further impoverish the poor masses.
The group urged Nigerian Electricity Regulation Commission (NERC) and the Distribution Companies (DisCos) to reverse the increment, adding that Nigerians are yet to adjust and come to terms with the exorbitant cost of living caused by hyper inflation in the country.
NANS in a statement signed by their National President, Comrade Lucky Emonefe and made available to newsmen, has condemned the hike in electricity tariff, describing it as an oppressive measures.
