Journalists Are Catalysts For Sustainable Devt – Essien

The founder, Blue Economy Academy, Mr. Ubong Essien has reiterated the need for journalists to play a leading role in the blue economy, describing them as Rescuers and not only Reporters.

He disclosed this during the activities marking the opening ceremony of the NUJ, Correspondents Chapel Press Week 2025, at the NBA Hall, Port Harcourt, recently, stressing that Ocean journalism is not a niche but a necessity.

He urged journalists to see themselves as rescuers who through communication should create awareness of the blue economy nationwide.

According to Essien, every journalist should carry two beats and one of which should be Ocean Reportage, from where a lot of stories emerges.

He further disclosed that under such are stories about Pollution, Maritime, Ports Congestion, Artisanal fishing, Coastal erosion among others.

He maintained that in a blue economy, a journalist is not a bystander but a bridge between strategy and society; poised in shaping the public by creating awareness.

This, he said is done through communication; emphasizing that no one can do it alone.

He explained the 4C involved to include: Collaboration, Cooperation, Coordination and Communication.
