FIFA WOMEN’S WORLD CUP: Former Champions on the Verge of Elimination

Norway the 1995 FIFA Women’s World Cup champions are on the verge of being eliminated from the ongoing World Cup after they settled for a goalless draw in their second group A match with Switzerland.

This result left them bottom in the group with only one point. Recall that they lost their opening match to co-host, New Zealand 1-0 and are the only team in the group yet to win a match after Philippines defeated New Zealand by a lone goal earlier today.

All the four teams have played two games and are left with only one match to play, the group remains open with all the teams having a chance of qualifying for the knockout stage.

Switzerland lead with four points, followed by co-host New Zealand with three points and  superior goal difference to the Philippines, who are also on three points.

Unfortunately, group favorites, Norway are languishing in the bottom with one point. They must inflict a heavy defeat on Philippines and hope that Switzerland defeat New Zealand for them to qualify.
