Enugu Farmers Decry Farmland Destruction By Herdsmen

Farmers in Ugbawka Achala, in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, have decried incessant destruction of their crops by alleged Fulani herdsmen, and threat to their lives.

A farmer from the community, who gave her name as Ogechi Ogbodo, said she lost over N100,000 when herders harvest her cassava to feed their cattle. She said that farmers are afraid to go to their farms to cultivate because of how these herders attack and destroy their crops.

She added that fear of famine has gripped farmers in the community as no farmer goes to farm anymore.

Another farmer, Mercy Mbah who said she has not recovered from the shock since the herders destroyed her crops by grazing on her farmland, appealed to the Enugu state Government to come to her rescue.

They further said that, they have been advised by the vigilante groups to manage the situation by engaging the herders in a peace talk.

Meanwhile, some farmers have alleged that certain highly placed persons collected money from the herders to allow them have access to graze in the community.
