AWADEC 2023: Abia First Lady Unveils Moves To Support The Vulnerable

The wife of Abia State Governor, Mrs. Priscilla Otti has canvassed for the inclusion of women in all strata of leadership in Nigeria. Mrs. Otti made the call at the flag-off of Abia Women August Delegate Conference 2023, held at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia today.

Abia First Lady, who also charged women to uphold positive tenets and values our society are known for, added that the young people are looking up to them as role models.

She further said: “It is gratifying to note that we now have a government that is ready and committed to partnering with women associations and groups at all levels to solve problems and bring the desired development in Abia”.

She also disclosed that Gov Alex Otti believes strongly in the leadership abilities of women, maintaining that he has shown this through his choices and appointments so far.

She revealed that in the next few weeks, she will unveil strategic initiatives to support several categories of vulnerable people across the state, especially single mothers, widows, infants, and children with special needs.

The Abia Governor’s wife empowered 104 indigent Abians with various packages.

In her keynote address, titled: “Women As Agent Of Change” Professor Edith Nwosu of the University of Nigeria Nsukka, stated that women play enormous role in community development and nation-building.

She further called on the government to make policies that will enable women break through and realize their potential in leadership roles.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Women Development, Mrs. Ngozi Blessing Philip said the August Women Meeting would create an opportunity for Igbo women from far and near to come together, share their thoughts and contribute meaningfully to the development of their various communities.

In their separate lectures, Dr. Orieji Uka and Mrs. Blessing Enyinnaya decried the dangers of domestic abuse, calling on the government to domesticate laws that will punish the offenders.

They further opined that when women are equitably empowered, they would excel and make meaningful contributions to nation-building.
