PLOTTING AGAINST THE BEHEMOTH

The renewed efforts by opposition leaders in Abia State to position themselves for the 2027 governorship election reflect the deep hunger for power that often characterizes Nigerian politics.

Indeed, this appears to be a stirring against a behemoth. But how far can they go?

Some observers of Abia politics view the recent gathering of the opposition, particularly within the APC, as a much-publicized “mega meeting” of political heavyweights many of whom had long been in disarray but are now attempting to regroup, re-strategize, and reinvent themselves.

In a healthy democracy, the presence of opposition parties is not only welcome but necessary. It is also widely acknowledged that Governor Alex Otti is not opposed to constructive opposition.

While prominent opposition figures in the state are actively mobilizing, many Abians remain skeptical about their ability to achieve their primary objective emerging as a formidable force against the ruling Labour Party in future elections.

The governor appears unperturbed by the evolving alliances within the opposition, which, at best, seem tenuous. Internal divisions, mutual suspicion, and personal ambitions continue to undermine their cohesion.

There is no doubt that significant political maneuvering is underway. However, many Abians believe the state was drifting prior to 2023 and required credible leadership to reverse the trend. In what some describe as divine providence, Dr. Alex Otti emerged to rescue the state from the grip of the PDP, which many felt had left the people in despair.

The 2023 elections reflected widespread dissatisfaction with the PDP’s performance. Citizens embraced the opportunity for change, ushering in what they hoped would be purposeful leadership one capable of restoring hope, ensuring accountability, and managing resources responsibly.

What the opposition may not fully grasp is that the current administration has cultivated a strong base of committed supporters—democrats and patriots who believe the state has been pulled back from the brink.

Moments arise in history when citizens unite against perceived bad governance, and many believe that was the defining feature of the last election. Personal and partisan differences were set aside in the interest of rescuing the state.

At one point, governance in Abia was widely ridiculed, prompting collective action for change. Today, while the opposition seeks to reorganize and assert itself, its prominent figures do not necessarily intimidate the current administration. Instead, their efforts present an opportunity to test political relevance and public acceptance.

Many supporters of the present government view the opposition as fragmented, lacking cohesion, vision, and the capacity to present a credible alternative. Some even speculate that, over time, elements within the opposition may realign politically.

Still, other analysts interpret the opposition’s resurgence as a necessity driven by political survival rather than conviction. To them, it reflects the familiar pattern of ambition-driven alliances common in Nigerian politics.

Critics also argue that the opposition is united more by self-interest than by a shared vision. Yet, as earlier noted, opposition remains an essential ingredient of democracy. Without it, democratic governance weakens.

To its credit, the Abia State Government has allowed opposition voices to operate freely, demonstrating political maturity. Constructive criticism grounded in facts should be encouraged, as it promotes transparency, accountability, and good governance.

In any functional democracy, the opposition serves as a watchdog, checking the excesses of those in power. However, such a role must be exercised responsibly, without descending into bitterness or personal vendettas.

Meanwhile, many Abians continue to commend Governor Alex Chioma Otti, describing him as a visionary leader whose commitment to development is reshaping the state. His pursuit of a “New Abia” has inspired both residents and those in the diaspora.

From the outset of his administration, Otti’s vision and policy direction have remained consistent. Observers note that his driving force appears rooted in service to humanity, with visible impact across multiple sectors.

The current administration is widely seen by supporters as a renewal of hope. The governor’s leadership style, often described as focused and pragmatic, has earned him admiration among many citizens.

Otti is regarded as a leader committed to holistic development, and the transformation underway in Abia State is, for many, an inspiring story one whose legacy may endure for years to come.
