State Government Targets Illegal Drugs, Plans More Demolitions

The Governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri, has promised to continue fighting illegal drugs and crime in Yenagoa and other parts of the state.

He spoke during the 42nd State Security Council meeting at Government House in Yenagoa. The governor talked about the recent demolition of a drug dealers’ hideout known as “Aboki Quarters” in Yenizue-Gene. The building was pulled down by security agencies following his approval.

Governor Diri praised the security commanders for carrying out the operation quickly. He said his government will not allow shanties or buildings where drugs are sold and young people are harmed.

He also said he personally visited another nearby location suspected of similar activities and directed security agencies to monitor it and take action if necessary.

The governor made it clear that the government is not asking non-indigenes to leave the state. He said Bayelsa remains one of the safest and most welcoming states in Nigeria for everyone to live and do business.

Governor Diri also expressed concern over recent clashes between rival cult groups that led to the death of three people. He ordered security agencies to arrest those responsible.

Speaking at the meeting, the Deputy High Commissioner of the British High Commission, Gill Lever, said her visit was to update the governor on a partnership programme that has been running for three years in Bayelsa and three other states.

She explained that the programme aims to reduce cultism and illegal drug use at the community level. It also helps vulnerable young people leave crime by training them in vocational skills so they can earn a living.

She praised the state government for focusing on security and youth empowerment, noting that more than 200 young people have been trained and given tools to start their own work.

The Commissioner for Youth Development, Alfred Nimizigha, also commended the governor for supporting the programme. He said the initiative focuses on agriculture and skills training to help young people build sustainable livelihoods.
