Reps Review 2026–2028 MTEF/FSP, Seek Stronger Fiscal Sustainability

The House of Representatives last ,Wednesday, December 17, 2025, held an interactive session on the 2026–2028 Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP), as part of efforts to strengthen fiscal sustainability and ensure prudent economic planning.

The session, jointly organised by the House Committees on Finance and on National Planning and Economic Development, was chaired by the Chairman of the Committee on Finance, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) James Abiodun Faleke, alongside his counterpart on National Planning and Economic Development, Rep. Gboyega Nasir Isiaka.

Top officials of the Executive arm of government were in attendance, including the Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun; the Honourable Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Atiku Abubakar Bagudu; and the Accountant-General of the Federation, Mr. Shamseldeen Babatunde Ogunjimi. Also present were representatives of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and other relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

During the session, the ministers and heads of agencies made detailed presentations on the macroeconomic assumptions, revenue projections and policy priorities underpinning the 2026–2028 fiscal framework.

Lawmakers engaged the Executive on key issues, including the realism of revenue projections, strategies for boosting the performance of revenue-generating agencies, fiscal deficit management, debt sustainability and the alignment of macroeconomic assumptions with prevailing economic conditions.

Members of the Committees stressed the importance of transparency, credible benchmarks and effective implementation mechanisms to ensure that projected economic gains translate into tangible improvements in the living standards of Nigerians.

At the end of the engagement, the Committees resolved to further scrutinise the submissions and consolidate their observations into a comprehensive report. The report, when finalised, will be laid before the House at plenary for consideration and approval, in line with constitutional provisions making the MTEF a statutory requirement for the preparation and passage of the 2026 Appropriation Bill.
