WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS: Nigeria to Face DR Congo in Playoff Final

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will face the Leopards of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the final of the CAF World Cup Qualifying playoff in Morocco on Sunday.

Chancel Mbemba scored the decisive goal for DR Congo in their clash with the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, ending the five-time African champions’ hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.

Cameroon, the first African side to reach a World Cup quarterfinal back in 1990 in Italy, also hold the record for the most African appearances at the tournament, with eight overall. However, they will miss out on next year’s expanded 48-team competition.

Both DR Congo and Cameroon created several chances during their encounter, but it was the Leopards’ captain who ultimately made the difference. DR Congo is aiming to return to the World Cup for the second time in its history, following its debut in 1974.
