UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Liverpool Defeat Atletico To Reach Knock-out Stage

Liverpool comfortably defeated Atletico Madrid 2-0 to qualify for the knock-out stage of this season’s UEFA Champions League. Diego Jota and Sadio Mane found the back of the net early in the first half and after Felipe was sent off with nine minutes to the end of the first half, it was obvious that their will be no coming back for the Spaniards.

VAR was called to action twice in the second half and in both occasions goals by Diego Jota and former Liverpool striker, Luiz Suarez was ruled out.

Liverpool have now gone 16 games without defeat this season. In fact their last defeat dates back to April 6, when they lost to Real Madrid in the quarter-finals of last season’s Champions league.

In group B’s other match, AC Milan failed to make full use of their home advantage as they settled for a 1-1 draw with FC Porto.

Manchester City took over the leadership of group A with a 4-1 thrashing of Club Brugge as RB Leipzig and Paris Saint Germain settled for a 2-2 draw.

Ajax are through to the knock-out stage with a 1-3 defeat of Borrusia Dortmund to complete a double over the Germans having defeated them 4-0 in the reverse fixture.

In group C’s other encounter, Sporting Lisbon brushed Besiktas aside 4-0.

In group D, Karim Benzema scored a brace as Real Madrid defeated Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 while Sheriff Tiraspol lost 1-3 to Inter Milan.
