In a remarkable show of commitment to grassroots governance, the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers has declared its readiness to sponsor the forthcoming Local Government Council elections scheduled for August 9, 2025, should the state government be unable to fund the process due to a lack of federal allocation.
Speaking at the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) stakeholders’ meeting held in Port Harcourt, the Chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers, HRM Eze Chike Worlu Wodo, represented by the Amanyanabo of Oproama, HRH Barr. (Surv.) Tubotamuno Asifamabia Dick-Jaw III (OPOLOBIA IV), commended RSIEC for its timely efforts in organizing the elections. He emphasized that the commission’s actions demonstrate a commitment to the people of Rivers State, who are eagerly anticipating a fully functional local government system.
The traditional ruler further revealed that the council, comprising all traditional leaders in the state, has given its full blessings to the electoral process. He stated that should funds fail to be allocated for the elections, the traditional rulers would organize a fundraising initiative to finance the exercise, ensuring that democracy at the grassroots level is not stalled.
The stakeholders’ meeting, which brought together party chairmen, RSIEC officials, civil society groups and other critical stakeholders, also featured a reaffirmation of commitment from the Chairman of RSIEC, Hon. Justice Adolphus Enebeli (Rtd). He assured that the commission remains steadfast in conducting a credible, free, and fair LGA election come August 9, 2025.
The declaration by the traditional rulers signals a strong resolve to uphold democratic principles in Rivers State, even in the face of financial and political uncertainties.
