Sanitation: Abia heading to its desired destination – Commissioner

Abians have been encouraged to continue to respond to the call of making Abia look green and clean again by working to keep their environments neat.

The Commissioner for Environment Mr Philemon Ogbonna who stated this today in an interview after monitoring the sanitation exercise in Umuahia, said there is always room for improvement to enable the State get to its desired destination

 

According to Ogbonna, the essence of ensuring the Monthly sanitation exercise was to encourage people to imbibe the culture of keeping their surroundings clean without being compelled to do so.

The Commissioner who later addressed some persons who were caught by Officers of the environmental sanitation mobile Court for flouting rules of the exercise, frowned at why people had refused to obey simple Government instructions.

Also lending his voice, the member representing Ohafia South State Constituency and Chairman House Committee on Environment Hon Kalu Mba Nwoke, regretted that some men who claim to be military officers transport people during exercise which has posed a major challenge in enforcing the exercise.

He appealed for Active Corporation to ensure a successful exercise.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Prof. Ijeoma Iheukwumere, advised Abians to shun blocking the drains with refuse to avoid flood disaster, particularly as the rains sets in.

She also warned those trading at th Isi-gate axis of Umuahia and transporters to be patient and respect the hours mapped out for the sanitation exercise, as anything contrary tantamount to sabotaging the exercise.
