Gov Otti Reiterates Commitment To Healthcare As NNPC Flags Off Free Cataract Surgeries in Abia

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to improving access to quality health services for the people of the State, describing healthcare as a critical sector.

Governor Otti stated this when he received the Consultant Coordinator of the Free Cataract Surgery Project by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), Dr. Mrs Ann Amugo, and her team on a visit to his office.

The visit followed the successful flag-off of the NNPC’s free cataract surgery initiative in Abia, which is taking place simultaneously in three locations across the State.

The Governor who expressed gratitude to the NNPC for choosing Abia as the flag-off location for the medical outreach, commended the impressive turnout of residents during the screening exercise.

He attributed the large number of beneficiaries to effective mobilisation and the deep-rooted need for medical support among the people.

Governor Otti noted that several medical interventions have already been carried out under his administration as part of efforts to reposition the health sector in the State.

According to him, healthcare remains a top priority because of its direct impact on the wellbeing of the citizenry.

Anywhere in the world, healthcare is not cheap. In places where it appears cheap, it is the option of death. That is why we take health seriously and will continue to support initiatives like this. This is the kind of thing we appreciate,” Otti said.

He reiterated that his administration has “no choice but to fix Abia,” noting that quality healthcare is central to his agenda of transforming the State.

In her remarks earlier, Dr. Amugo expressed appreciation to the State Government for its support and cooperation, which she said has been instrumental to the smooth rollout of the free cataract project.
