Belgium laboured to defeat Canada by a lone goal in one of the Group F matches, but it was a dismal performance by the Europeans who are ranked second in the world. Michy Batshuayi scored the only goal of the match against the run of play, when he collected Toby Alderweireld’s long ball and fired a powerful left-foot finish past Milan Borjan.
In fact, it was Canada’s wastefulness that gave Belgium the victory, not the European’s performance.
Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies saw a first half penalty saved by Belgium keeper, Thibaut Courtois. There were other appeals for penalty by the North Americans that were not granted.
Belgium will take on one of Africa’s representatives, Morocco on Sunday while Canada will lurk horns with Croatia.
