1 Out Of  8 Would Suffer Breast Cancer Says Prof. Ogu

One in eight women would have breast cancer in life time.

This troubling data was given by a professor gynaecologist in an obstetrics at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital.

 

Professor Rosemary Ogu in an interview with our reporter says despite this alarming figure that her fears is that in the coming years, the number will climb.

 

She said though advocacy and sensitisation is increasing, yet there are more cases of breast cancer.

She said this is as a result of increase resistance due to religion perception, cultural believes and poverty.

She further explained that because of the fear of the disease, some people now embrace cultural and religious believes that lead them into denial.

 

The professor also warned that the use of contraceptives, alcohol, and smoking are the leading causes of cancer, stating that life time modifications and screening remains the best way to prevent breast cancer.

 

Professor Rosemary Ogu however, advised women to keep weight in check because being over weight can increase the risk of breast cancer especially after menopause. She also advised them to eat a lot of fruits and vegetables.

Professor Rosemary Ogu further encouraged women to be familiar with their breast and tell a health care provider right away if they notice any changes in how their breasts look or feel. Adding that they should go for breast cancer screening to help find cancer early when it is most treatable.
