DGov Commends Group Over Improving Welfare Of Women In Abia..

The Deputy Governor of Abia State, Engr Ikechukwu Emetu has commended the Nigeria for Women Project for the progress made so far in improving the lives of women in the State.


Engr Emetu made the commendation during the Steering Committee Meeting of the Nigeria for Women Project held in his office at Government House, Umuahia.

The Deputy Governor who is also the Chairman of the Steering Committee of Nigeria for Women Project said that the essence of the meeting is to know the progress made so far and the challenges facing them and proffer solutions.


” Knowing that this particular project take care of the women because that are the one who made the homes.

I want to say from what I’ve seen so far , they are doing very well and from what we plan to achieve in this committee, we really have to know the next plan that we have, and also to know the problem they have in their various local governments areas that are hampering the Project, he said.


Presenting her speech, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs Ngozi Blessing Felix said that the objective of Nigeria for Women Project is to support, improved the lives of women in six targeted States of Nigeria including Abia, Taraba, Akwa Ibom, Niger , Ogun and Kebbi representing the Geo- Political zones.

She commended Gov. Otti and his wife, Mrs Priscilla Otti for their numerous support as well as the paid counterpart fund GCC for the current scale- up phase.

Mrs Felix further stated that in Abia, the project was implemented in 3 local government areas of Ohafia, Isiala Ngwa North and Obingwa, while the project has 4 Components namely: Building social capital, Livelihoods program, innovation and partnerships and monitoring and Evaluation.


In her words: as part of the project design, women were mobilized into Women Affinity Group ( WAGs) where they save and loan money to each other and a total of 3,657 WAGs were formed with a total number of 75,336 beneficiaries.


The Meeting featured an update, Challenges and way forward by the State Project Coordinating Unit ( SPCU) Mrs Chinenye Amos-Uhegbu as well as goodwill messages from Mayor of Ohafia Chief David Ogba Onuoha and his Counterpart from Obingwa, Dr. Eric Egwuibe among others.
