The elevation of the Edo State-born Mr. Benson Ojeikere as the new Abia State Head of Service (HOS) has continued to attract nationwide applause on account of its salutary effect on the thorny issue of the national question.
The appointment of Mr. Ojeikere is the by-product of a systematic approach by Governor Alex Otti to restore the merit-based principle in recruitment, promotion, and discipline in the Civil Service.
Prior to May 29, 2023, when Dr. Alex Otti came into the saddle, the Service was characterized by a great deal of indiscipline and arbitrariness. The net effect was a largely ineffective Civil Service, which Governor Otti’s regime inherited on assumption of office.
Since coming into power, Governor Otti has waged a relentless war to reposition the Civil Service.
The war on ghost workers, absenteeism, and truancy are all parts of the efforts to build an effective and efficient Civil Service for the state.
The re-establishment of an open, competitive, and merit-based system as the basis for recruitment into different cadres of the Civil Service ranks as one of the most important actions of Gov. Otti’s administration towards bequeathing the state with an efficient and effective Public Service.
An efficient and effective Civil Service plays a pivotal role in the efficient delivery of government policies.
In the written and oral interview set by the Governor and his team, Mr. Benson Ojeikere emerged as the best candidate for the job of the Head of Service. He was accordingly elevated as such.
We at the Editorial Desk of National Ambassador Newspapers congratulate Mr. Benson Ojeikere. We also wish to applaud the Executive Governor of Abia State, His Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti, for instituting a merit-based system in the State, which has made it possible for the most qualified candidate to emerge as the HOS in the State.
More importantly, we wish to acknowledge Governor Otti’s push to build a society where the operative norms will be based on the merit-based principle.
The abolishment of the non-indigene dichotomy and other such discriminatory policies are part of his effort to push the merit-based principle forward.
It is within this context that we call on every well-meaning person to join this crusade to make the merit-based principle an overriding one in our society.
Once again, a very big congratulations to Mr. Benson Ojeikere for his elevation as the HOS, Abia State.
We wish him well as he undertakes the onerous task of building up an efficient Abia State Civil Service.
