The Deputy Speaker, Federal House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu has said any good leader should put the people first, as leadership is about the people
.
Speaking in his country home in Bende L.G.A of Abia State, during his 53rd birthday anniversary celebration. the Deputy Speaker, who is also representing Bende Federal Constituency, maintained that the aged/elderly are very important personalities in the society who should be shown love and support.
He said that it was in the bid to cover up the existing gap, that he resolved to celebrate his 53rd birthday anniversary with the elderly, the indigent, vulnerable and the downtrodden.
He pointed out that inculcating the physically challenged, widows, motherless babies into his birthday celebration was the best form of celebration, and maintained that the action has nothing to do with politics, but simply an act of obedience to the instructions from God
According to him, he came down from Abuja to celebrate his birthday with this class of persons, because he was instructed specifically by God to celebrate his birthday with the aforementioned persons, adding that they need all the love they could get.
“Leaving Abuja and coming here to celebrate with these people gives me so much joy. I’m happy and i feel fulfilled seeing smiles on them. This is what leadership is about”, he also added.
Rt. Hon. Kalu announced that the event would be a yearly event for the purpose of giving a sense of belonging, providing food items, offering medical attention, among others.
Speaking respectively the member representing Southeast in the North East Development Commission, Hon. Sam Onuigbo and Special Assistant to the Deputy Speaker on intergovernmental affairs Hon Chijioke Chukwu, observed that despite holding the highest political position in the southeast, Rt. Hon. Kalu chose to come down to his constituents to celebrate with his people and downtrodden in his area.
They further said he would have chosen to celebrate it in Abuja or pages of newspapers or with the big and mighty to share his joy but he decided to remember his humble beginning.
They wished him good health, divine protection as well, greater heights in his political sphere.
Our reporter observed that it was an emotional moment and great show of love for humanity, as pensioners in the state, physically challenged persons, children from orphanage homes, the less privileged among others, gathered in the residence of the deputy speaker for the birthday anniversary celebration.
These special persons, defaulted every possible challenge, and turned out in their numbers to felicitate with their son and brother, who also doubles as the number six citizen of the country.
Our reporter observed that the event recorded unprecedented jubilation from guests, as they were not only treated to sumptuous meals but were given palliatives of bags rice, cartons of spaghetti, tin tomatoes,groundnut oil, cartons of seasoning cubes, bags of garri, beans, beverages, toiletries.
Among others were cartons of noodles, mattresses,mat, mosquito treated nets,duvet covers, flip flops and of course cash gifts.
The event equally witnessed free medical check up and the treatment of over 4000 persons with sight impairment and as well, the distribution of medicated eye glasses to the affected ones.
