In a significant development for the children of Ikot Offiong, Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State, a ray of hope shines as they prepare to return to their classrooms after prolonged disruption caused by communal conflict. The newly elected Obong of Calabar, Etubom Anthony Ani, has unveiled a promising solution to their education crisis.
Obong Anthony Ani, a former minister of finance during the late General Abacha’s administration, has pledged to spearhead the rebuilding efforts of both primary and secondary schools in the afflicted region. Addressing the issue during a recent press conference, the Obong explained that he was motivated to embark on this initiative after a delegation from Ikot Offiong raised concerns about the dire situation faced by their community.
For the past 23 years, the devastating conflict has uprooted these children from their educational pursuits and has left the community devoid of essential social amenities. Expressing his commitment to rectify this predicament, Obong Ani emphasized that he chose to take proactive leadership in reconstructing the schools, rather than relying solely on governmental intervention.
Highlighting the paramount importance of education as a catalyst for development and progress, the former minister noted that “children should not be allowed to waste as education is considered the bedrock of development and progress“.
To operationalize this initiative, a dedicated committee has been established to assess the necessary prerequisites for the reconstruction of the schools. The rebuilding process will commence with the primary school facilities, followed by the secondary school infrastructure. In a bid to further incentivize education, the Obong has pledged to grant scholarships to deserving students.
This announcement has sparked a renewed sense of optimism among the residents of Ikot Offiong, who have long yearned for a return to normalcy after years of turmoil.
