Bayelsa state Government has urged her citizens to avoid actions that makes the state vulnerable to flooding.
This is following the warning from Nigerian Meteorological Agency which predicted of massive flooding across several states in the country.
The Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, had charged the Min. Of Environment and Sanitation Authority to clear and opens up natural water canals to facilitate unrestricted water flow to avoid flooding in the state.
He gave this directives during the State Executive Council at the Exco Chambers, Government House in Yenagoa while describing Bayelsa as the exit point where waters from River Niger and Benue River empty into the Atlantic Ocean.
Senator Ewhrudjakpo, urged the people and the state government to be fully prepare for any flood emergency and to avoid disposal of refuse on drainages and other water channels to prevent flooding and environmental pollution in the state.
“We need to be on hyper alert, even though this year’s flood may not be huge as the ones of 2012 or 2022, we really have to be ready for preventions, by making sure our drainages are cleared. And the state Governor has also directed the Ministry of Environment to collaborate with the state Environmental Sanitation Authority to ensure that there is regular clearing of drainages”, he said.
He expressed satisfaction with the level of readiness and well prepared from the State Emergency Management Agency. And also urged the local government councils to complement the state government’s efforts by putting measures in place to alleviate the suffering of the people in the event of any devastating flooding experience in the state.
He appreciated the efforts of the security agencies to keep the state safe for investments and socio-economic activities to thrive in Bayelsa. And also encouraged the Bayelsans to maintain their love and support for the Governor and state at large as they join hands in the upcoming state annual thanksgiving service which will take place on the 2nd November, 2024 here in Yenagoa.
