World Toilet Day: USAID decries poor waste management in Abia

Abians have been advised to ensure that they have healthy sanitary systems that is gender sensitive and accommodates people living with disabilities.

The Executive Director, Grassroots Development Initiative, GRACODEV, Mrs. Gladys Ihediwanma, who stated this during this year’s World Toilet Day celebration held at Umuekwule Civic Hall, Umuopara, in Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State, lamented on poor waste management in the State describing it as unfortunate.

According to her, GRACODEV is one of the Civil Society Organizations under the sponsorship of USAID for E- WASH project in Abia state.

While advocating for more attention to be paid on waste management, Ihediwanma, noted that the way much is paid to procure food and drinks, such should be given to waste that comes out of it adding that abians should have efficient toilet system in their households, communities and the State at large.

Earlier in his speech, the Chairman WASH Customers’ Forum of the USAID in the State, Comrade Onyebuchi Isaac, enjoined Abians to desist from open defecation as such is unhealthy to human body system and urged them to have good toilet facilities in their houses, offices to promote good standard of living for the environment and everyone.

Speaking at the event in Umuahia, the zone A woman leader of WASH programme in Abia, Mrs. Joy Opara, stated that people should be sensitized on the best hygiene practice,adding that the health system in our society should be upgraded to meet the global best practices.

She encouraged people to do away with pit toilet and stop indiscriminate defecation in open places.

Also contributing, the Head commercial service department, Abia State Water and Sewage Corporation, Chief Ogbonna Ugochukwu, thanked Governor Okezie lkpeazu for making sanitation and hygiene a watch word in our, secondary, tertiary institutions, churches and communities.

Ogbonna further advise abians to key into the governor’s template on the need to provide efficient toilet systems in our homes.
