The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Prince Okey Kanu made the disclosure,Monday while briefing Journalists on the outcome of this week’s Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
Prince Kanu who underscored the state government’s commitment to infrastructure development across the state, said the roads were done through direct labour.
He said that Isieketa-Obikabia road was completed last week and added that other ongoing road projects including Ossah road, Umuahia, Port Harcourt road Aba, Umuahia -Uzuakoli-Isukwuato-Ohafia road, the Nunya-Isukwuato road, Arochukwu-Ndi-okereke -Ozu Abam road among other road projects are progressing.
The Commissioner lauded the transformative impact witnessed across the state, noting that the past eleven months under the leadership of Governor Otti has seen a surge in development efforts, with Abia State experiencing a notable shift towards greatness.
“Eleven months ago, this government took over the reins of power in Abia State. It’s eleven months ago that Dr Alex Otti promised Abians that he was going to rebuild the state and you’ll agree with me that it’s been an eleven months of power packed performance by this administration and in just eleven months quite a lot has changed.
“Abia is no longer where it used to be. Friends and foes alike will agree with me that Abia is on the way to greatness.
“Governance is a marathon and not a sprint. It’s still early days but our government is headed towards the right direction and at the appropriate time, will give an account of stewardship since inception.
“We’ve done so much in eleven months and that’s not sounding immodest“, the Commissioner said.
Prince Okey Kanu highlighted one of the standout accomplishments of the Governor Otti administration to include the off setting of pension arrears and restoration of full payment of pension to pensioners in the state which he noted has brought immense joy and relief to retirees across the state.
“It’s been a case of promise made and promise kept. Last month, when the government paid outstanding pension arrears to our pensioners, there was a promise made, that promise is that as from this month (April), our pensioners were going to get 100 percent of their pensions.
“I want to announce to us that, that has just happened. Since the 27th of this month they (pensioners) have been receiving their alerts”, Prince Kanu disclosed.
According to the Commissioner, the State Government is interested in the improvement of Workers’ Welfare in the state and is currently monitoring conversations of the federal government on the issue of salary increment.
He assured that the State Government would make a proclamation on the issue of salary increment at the appropriate time in line with what it can afford.
Contributing, the Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr. Chinedu Ekeke assured that the present administration is interested in the welfare of the workers.
“The Federal Government is currently considering a wage review and negotiations are ongoing and at the State Executive Council level, we are monitoring that conversation.
“Our stand as a state government is that we do not want to go ahead of the federal government to make a proclamation on that because you do not know where the direction that the federal government is headed.
“So, it’s better for us to wait and then see what the federal government wants to do and then, we now look at what we can afford as a state and then move but clearly, the state government is interested in the improvement of workers’ welfare and salaries’ increment is part of that plan“, Ekeke maintained.
The Commissioner for Land and Housing, Mr. Chaka Chukwumereije, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information and Culture, Sir Chris Onwuegbu, the State Director of Information, Mrs. Ugochi Ihediwa were present during the briefing.
