WAEC Introduces Quicker WASSCE Retake Option for Students

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has launched a new initiative to reduce delays for candidates needing to retake one or two papers in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

According to John Kapi, WAEC’s head of public affairs, the program, named WASSCE PC1, will enable students to resit specific subjects in January and February 2025. This initiative eliminates the traditional waiting period for the next examination cycle, offering a faster option for candidates to improve their results.

The program is particularly beneficial for candidates in Ghana and other West African countries whose recent WASSCE results include failed subjects, allowing them to retake exams earlier. Describing the initiative as a milestone for education in the region, Kapi said, “This initiative offers students a timely opportunity to improve their grades and maintain academic progression.”

The registration process for WASSCE PC1 is open until January 8, 2025. Candidates can register online via WAEC’s official website or through accredited internet cafés. The examinations will take place from January 24 to February 15, 2025.

Initially, the exams will be conducted in regional capitals, as WAEC anticipates a relatively small number of participants for this maiden edition. Kapi assured that the approach ensures both efficiency and accessibility for candidates. “Students can now avoid a year-long academic setback, thanks to this initiative,” he said, encouraging prospective candidates to register promptly.
