Violence, Apathy, Mar Rivers LG Polls

Saturday’s Local Government Election in Rivers State was said to have witnessed low turnout of voters at the polling units.

Our reporter gathered  that most residents in parts of Port Harcourt, Obio/Akpor and other parts of the state remained indoors.

 

The Chairman of Abua/Odual local government area and candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, Daniel Daniel while addressing Journalists after casting his vote at Anyu, Odual in decried low turnout of voters for the election.

 

“I am not too impressed with the turnout for today’s election.

 

“The election started a bit late because the materials had to come from Abua through Bayelsa to this place. So that is the issues”

Our reporter reports that the election also witnessed hijacking of electoral materials in Ikwerre LGA and pockets of violence in some polling units in, Gokana, Asari/Toru, Ikwerre and Opobo/Nkoro local government areas of the state.

 

At Ikwerre LGA, SDP councillorship candidate in Apani, Hope Amadi was reportedly beaten and chased to the bush by some sponsored thugs.

 

In Opobo/Nkoro LGA, hoodlums we learnt, attacked PDP Councillorship candidate in Ward 7, Tumini Jaja.

 

The attack we gathered was allegedly sponsored by another member of the PDP in the area.

Similarly, in Asari Toru LGA, candidates and agents of some opposition parties have called for cancellation of the election at Abalama, Ward 11.

 

The SDP Councillorship candidate, Daerogo West accused RSIEC officials of allegedly arriving the 15 polling units in the ward with fake result sheets.

 

Agent of the party in unit 13, Vincent Kelvin also alleged that the ad-hoc staff were thump printing for PDP at multiple times.

 

Backing their claims, the ADC agent, Bestman Experience alleged that thugs loyal to the PDP attempted to beat him up when he raised the issue of irregularities in the ward.
